Each April, in celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day, Buffalo State University hosts a celebration of sustainability. Buffalo State's 2023 Sustainability Fair took place on April 20 in the Campbell Student Union. There were many opportunities for faculty, staff and students to learn about Buffalo State's commitment to sustainable practices, the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum and their impact on campus and community stakeholders. For more information, please contact the Campus Planning Office.
At the end of each semester, Evergreen collects items from Buffalo State students as they depart from their campus residences. Donation sites located near the residence halls collect tons of material that would otherwise be thrown away.
Donated items include clothing, non-perishable food items, furniture and appliances. Once collected the items are assessed for reuse and then donated to dozens of not-for-profit organizations in Western New York.
Buffalo State employees are encouraged to clean out their storage spaces, desks, and filing cabinets of unwanted office supplies and bring them to Surplus. Faculty and staff from all offices on campus, are invited to "shop" free-of-charge in the Moore Hall warehouse for these office supplies. There is also an extensive supply of surplus office furniture from which to choose. For more information, please contact the Property Control and Sustainable Programs office.
In the spring of each year, Evergreen encourages donations of prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses from members of the Buffalo State community. Donated glasses are assessed for reuse and then distributed to individuals in need by the Lions Club.
Throughout the month of April you may donate glasses via drop boxes located at the information desks in the Student Union or E.H. Butler Library. Or, you may send glasses via campus mail to Moore Hall 124.
Since 2010, members of the Buffalo State community have donated more than 600 pairs of eyeglasses for reuse.
Unused prescription drugs can not only harm individuals; they may also damage the environment as a result of improper disposal.
Buffalo State is one of 42 Western New York sites for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and supported by a number of New York State agencies including the Department of Health, the event helps to ensure the safe and responsible disposal of medications by providing convenient drop-off locations.
America Recycles Day is a program dedicated to promoting recycling nationwide. Each November thousands of recycling events are held on the same day -- usually November 15 -- throughout the country.
Evergreen and the New York State Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) partner to participate in this important effort, hosting an annual drive to collect computers and electronics for recycling.
Throughout the year there are locations in our community where citizens may dispose of medical waste and unneeded medications.
On January 13, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the City of Buffalo will host a recycling event for Buffalo residents. Items acceptable for drop-off include electronics, clothing and Christmas trees. The event will take place as the City of Buffalo Engineering Garage, 1120 Seneca Street.
